Real listening is more than waiting for your turn to talk. It means paying attention to words, tone, emotion, energy, and subtext. Most people listen to respond. Very few listen to truly understand. Great listening lowers defenses and creates space for trust and openness.
Empathy means genuinely trying to understand where another person is coming from and what may be shaping their perspective. It does not mean you automatically agree with them. It means you care enough to understand their lens, concerns, experiences, and emotions before rushing to judgment or conclusion.
Agreement does not mean weakness, appeasement, or avoiding hard conversations. It means identifying areas of alignment, clarifying expectations, and creating mutual understanding where possible. Sometimes the healthiest thing you can do is agree to disagree agreeably while maintaining respect and progress.
Partnership is where action and results happen. Real partnership requires accountability, ownership, trust, consistency, and mutual respect. When people genuinely align and partner together, communication improves, relationships strengthen, leadership becomes more effective, and better outcomes become possible.
Most relationship issues are not caused by bad intent. They're caused by poor listening, weak empathy, lack of agreement, and the absence of true partnership. Use LEAP.
Coaches, try this in your next session with a leadership team that feels stuck, tense, or checked out. Before you push on the scorecard or the Issues list, LEAP first. You'll be amazed how much faster the Work moves once the connection is there [and how much more the team is willing to tell you].
Because better listening creates better understanding. Better understanding creates better relationships. And better relationships change everything. BOS-UP and Carpe Momentum.
